Raising the bar in for internet browsers has been big business since the 1990’s.  Lynx and then Mosaic (later named Netscape) dominated the market in the early 90’s, at a time when there were few alternatives with the demands of ballooning internet craze.  As faults were found competitors began to rise.

In 1995 Internet Explorer was released followed by Opera in 1996 and Apple’s Safari much later in 2003.  The internet was accessible for all, across computer and mobile devices tracking information to nearly every corner of the globe.

Each time a new competitor came into the market there were significant improvements for users and opportunities for the corporations developing them.  While the public was lost in the glory of the ever-increasing features and speed of the internet and their supporting software, the corporations started a secret war on them.  Clouded behind marketing was the largest and most profitable thief to date, your data.

Starting with America Online (AOL) in 2004, where 92 million records were stolen in an internal hack it has been non-stop since then.  One breach in 2004, to six in 2005 (including banks and credit card providers), to a stunning eight-teen the next 2 years.  2008-2009 there were thirty.  I believe you get the picture now.  It quickly became an epidemic and one of the most exploited vulnerabilities was the internet browser coming to a head in 2013 when over 3 billion records were hacked from Yahoo.

If you are unaware, the Basic Attention Token $BAT is the native token of the Brave ecosystem.  Brave is a privacy focused browser that protects its users from unwanted third-party intervention.  Ads and trackers are rampant on nearly every site on the internet.  This is data about what you click, how long you watch and what you’re interested in but it is taken with your permission.  Did you know that?  Might be time to read the Terms of Service that likely not one of us has read in completion.

You the time your eyes are on the screen is measured and with many smart devices today corporations are able to even tell what you’re looking at on the screen.  Invaluable to advertisers your data is sold to the highest bidder.

Brave is the primary component of the Basic Attention Token’s use case.  The token itself is an ERC20 token, based on Ethereum, that advertisers use to pay for ads that you as a user can opt in or out of viewing.  If you opt in to see the ads, you get reward for your attention, with BAT tokens!

If you are paying attention (pun intended), then youo may be asking yourself, “but do they not need to track my activity to know what I’ve done to earn my tokens?  The short answer is yes, but the data doesn’t leave your local machine/browser.  It is not collected by a corporation or every stored or sold.

This is all made possible through the Brave technology built over the same technology as Google’s Chrome but with implemented blockchain technology for the secure and trusted communication.  Your Brave browser simply says “you are owed 3 BAT tokens” and they are sent to your private wallet built into the browser.

Thanks to a partnership with Uphold you are also now able to withdraw your BAT tokens to an external wallet or exchange, where you can sell, trade or HODL them in any way you chose.

Additionally, and preferably, as there are not hoards of tokens earn but a few dollars worth per month for most users, you may use the token for tipping.  Tips can be made to any website, any YouTube channel, and any person on Twitter or Reddit.

Users on the Brave network gain BAT token rewards by interacting with advertisements but unlike other browsers, the Brave browser maintains privacy of users’ information. Furthermore, Brave employs a 70-30% revenue share with users and verified publishers getting the lion’s share.

A recent study conducted by Douglas J. Leith, a professor at Trinity College at the University of Dublin, looked at Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Brave, Microsoft Edge (the new Chromium-based version), and the Yandex Browser.

Prof. Leith says that in their “out of the box” states, Brave is by far the most private browser, sending back the fewest amount of information.

“We did not find any use of identifiers allowing tracking of IP address overtime, and no sharing of the details of web pages visited with backend servers,” he said.

Discussion in late 2019 piqued the interest in users looking for a little more from the industry leading software and they may soon be getting it.  The Brave Blog outlined additional features like producing the worlds first Distributed virtual private networks (dVPNs).

To compensate for the widely deployed identify and block fraudulent bot traffic, Brave’s team is looking at technology similar to Googles reCAPTCHA v3.  Brave’s zkSENSE: a novel privacy-preserving mechanism for bot detection in smartphones. zkSENSE leverages device sensors, such as the gyroscope and accelerometer, to measure the device’s moving patterns, while either a human or a bot is interacting with an app on the device.

Brave recently uncovered widespread surveillance of UK citizens by private companies embedded on UK council websites. “Surveillance on UK council websites”.  This was a little different then not reading your Terms of Service, none of the data collecting companies (including Google) recorded in this study had received consent from the website visitor to lawfully process data.

Basic Attention Token is fueling the Brave ecosystem while also calling attentions to the widespread abuse of one of the most valuable assets in the world, our data.  With more hacks and breaches of our personal data year after year it has become an issue that governments and institutions are no longer ignoring and while there are may privacy preserving products being developed in the blockchain and cryptocurrency space, none are as widely used and complete as the Brave Browser.

Month on month growth of users and drive for a more diverse and inclusive product will help sustain the push for further adoption of this blockchain product.

“It begins with giving you back power. Get unmatched speed, security and privacy by blocking trackers. Earn rewards by opting into our privacy-respecting ads and help give publishers back their fair share of Internet revenue.”
